Dog City 2 Debuts
Leash Your Copy at SPX or FantaCon 2013, Next Weekend!
—and it’s all I’ve been able to do to keep my lip zipped about the second issue/volume/box, which (blush) I’m a contributor to this time around.
Dog City is an anthology that’s more than an anthology: it’s a big box o’comix! Every element of Dog City is its own uniquely formatted minicomic or zine, and there’s also the Dog City 2 zine in the box, offering articles (including one by yours truly), comix, illustrations, and more.
The contributors this time, along with Dog City founders/editors Juan Fernández, Luke Healy, and Simon Reinhardt, include myself, Caitlin Rose Boyle, Jon Chad, Ben Evans, Luke Howard, Christina Lee, Rachel Masilamani, Will Payne, Ian Richardson, Sara Sarmiento, Aaron Shrewsbury, d.w. (Dave Weiner), Connor Willumsen, and Iris Yan.
and having seen some of the offerings come together over the past few weeks in the Dog City 2 print lab, I can honestly tell you that some of these contributors have really upped their—and Dog City‘s—game considerably with what they’ve done for this collective box anthology. Amazing stuff!
- Here’s the official Dog City doghouse,
- here’s what they had to say about my humble contribution to this package, San(d) Papel, and my Dog City zine’s true-life account of Rick Veitch‘s and my visit with Bob Kane back in 1980,
and if you’re not able to attend either SPX or FantaCon 13 where the lads are walking the Dog for the first time,
I’ll not be at SPX (I only ever attended the first-ever, pre-SPX in Bethesda, MD, way back in the day), but I will be at FantaCon 13, as I announced last week.
and I’ll be manning tables with our sponsors Kurt Mausart and Tom Vincent, with fellow Center for Cartoon Studies cartoonists Denis St. John, Ian Richardson, Christopher “Radical” Warren, Randall Drew, Carl Antonowicz, Jesse Durona, and others. We’ll all have a huge selection of goodies on the tables, including all-new works!
I’ll be debuting two new creations, Denis St. John‘s and my second issue of Monster Pie (80 pages this time out, jam-packed with movie monster illustrations, portraits, articles, and comix!) and Joseph A. Citro, Chuck Forsman, and my oversized full-color suitable-for-framing Vermont’s Haunts haunted-Vermont map! More on those next week.
I’m also in—as an interview subject—and did the cover art for another amazing title debuting at FantaCon 13, which is John Szpunar‘s eagerly awaited Headpress brick-of-a-book Xerox Ferox: The Wild World of the Horror Film Fanzine! John interviewed everyone he could to make this the definitive overview of the horror film fanzine scenes, including the late, great Chas Balun (Deep Red) and Bill Landis (Sleazoid Xpress)—both friends of mine, sorely missed—as well as filmmakers like Jimmy McDonough, Mike McPadden, Steve Puchalski, Roy Frumkes, and Buddy Giovinazzo (whose Combat Shock I proudly and “first” showcased in the pages of Deep Red), and many, many more.
This stunning 500+ page volume will knock your sox off; I’ll be part of the Xerox Ferox fanzine discussion panel. The author, John Szpunar, and many of the people interviewed in the book will be in attendance, including yours truly, Dennis Daniel, Jim Whiting, Greg Goodsell, Kris Gilpin, Roy Frumkes, Graham Rae, and Tom Skulan. It’s going to be quite a panel for what is most definitely quite a book!
Take a gander at the full wraparound cover art I created for the book, sans cover and back cover text elements:
- (If you can’t make it to the book’s debut at FantaCon to buy your copy from John‘s hands, you can order your copy right now at the Headpress online store, via this link. It’s sure to be one of the genre books of 2013!)
It’s also now available online from amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, etc.
But I’ll tell you what you can’t find at those mass-market online venues:
With John and Headpress red-carpeting Xerox Ferox, I had to cook up something from my horror film fanzine past that would be special and apropos to FantaCon and my past with the FantaCo scene. So I dug into the SpiderBaby Archives, and I’ll be rolling out the 2013 reprint edition of my first-ever book, WE ARE GOING TO EAT YOU!, with a limited quantity in hand to sell at the show.
It’s an odd book, a facsimile edition of my original 2003 release: clear acetate protective covers over canary-yellow card stock cover art front and back, blue Fastbak binding, 336 pages (!!), over 75 of which feature rare illustrations from the SpiderBaby Archives; measures 8 1/2′ x 11″ x almost 1″ binding. This is a slightly revised (to update my address/online info only) recreation of the uber-rare 2003 limited ms. bound photocopy edition of the original dot-matrix printed manscript—it’s an artifact, folks, dressed up a bit, but complete and unexpurgated, the original full text the late, great Chas Balun edited down considerably for my chapter of THE DEEP RED HORROR HANDBOOK.
I’ll have online ordering options for those of you who can’t make it to FantaCon 13,
- but for now you can still order your copy of my cannibal book in its ‘Bare Bones’ signed edition at the SpiderBaby Store via this link,
for only $25.00 plus Flat Rate Priority shipping, anywhere in the world!
WE ARE GOING TO EAT YOU! ‘Original Sketch’ Edition (signed with an original Stephen R. Bissettesketch on the bonus interior cream white card stock cover) is now available at
for the PRE-ORDER 10 DAY SALE PRICE of just $45.00 US plus Flat Rate Priority shipping, anywhere in the world!
The 10-Day Pre-order window ends this week, after which the Sketch Edition will be $65.00 US plus shipping, while supplies last.
This is a significant savings (over 30% discount) pre-order discount window for serious collectors.
More details on who and what will be at FantaCon 2013 shortly!
And don’t forget: I also did the cover and interior cover art for the FantaCon 2013 program book, available only at FantaCon 2013! Designer Bill Anderson did a fantastic job pulling this massive tome together, and I’ll be happy to sign/personalize your copy for free at the show.
